Semi-Homemade Blueberry Crumble Muffins

Happy Monday!  Let me just tell you how stinkin’ excited I am about this recipe you’re about to see!  I have been on a mission for what seems like a decade to recreate a childhood favorite of mine – Blueberry Crumble Muffins.

Every Sunday my mother would make the family breakfast, we would gather around the kitchen table, and begin our day of rest right.  I have so many great Sunday Morning memories and that is something I always strive to pass along to my kids.  My mother tried to stick with the basics for us and always knew exactly what we all loved.  For us, boxed Duncan Hines Blueberry Streusel Muffins were always a hit.  I don’t know about you, but, I am not above using anything boxed if it means spending less time prepping before the actual meal is made.  Plus, my kids love to follow the directions on the box and hold me accountable for proper measurements of the additional items needed :).  Unfortunately, the original boxed version is no longer sold in stores (not in any of the cities I’ve lived in over the past decade, anyway), and the new version that I have purchased from Amazon isn’t the same…it tastes more like “diet food” than a traditional muffin would (in my opinion).

After much trial and error, I have finally perfected the crumble topping!

As I said, I am not above using boxed items to make a meal come together and this recipe will be no different.  I have combined boxed blueberry muffins and homemade crumble topping to create these Semi-Homemade Blueberry Crumble Muffins and I think you’re going to love them!

Blueberry Crumble Muffins

These delicious muffins were years in the making to recreate a childhood favorite of mine!  I love the ease of using a boxed mix while giving it a little extra something special with a homemade crumble topping.

Ingredients

Crumble Topping

  • 1/3 Cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1/3 Cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1 TSP Nutmeg
  • 1/4 TSP Salt
  • 1/2 Cup Unsalted Butter melted
  • 1 1/2 Cups All Purpose Flour

Muffins

  • 1 Box Duncan Hines Blueberry Muffin Mix

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400˚F and follow the instructions on the box to make the muffins in a large mixing bowl.
  • To make the crumble topping, combine the sugars, nutmeg, and salt in a small/medium bowl.  Pour in melted butter and slowly whisk in the flour.  Stir together using a rubber spoon/spatula until the mixture in combined and crumbly.
  • Prepare a muffin tin with silicone, or, paper liners.  Pour enough blueberry muffin batter to fill each tin 3/4 of the way full.  Top each muffin with a generous helping of the crumble topping and gently push the topping into the muffin mix to keep it in its place while baking.
  • Bake the muffins in the oven for 20-22 minutes until they're golden brown on top and pass the toothpick test.
  • Remove from the oven and let the muffins rest in the tin for 5-10 minutes.  You can then either move the muffins to a cooling rack to cool completely, or my personal favorite, smear with butter and enjoy!

Calling All Blondes: Why You Should Add Purple Shampoo To Your Hair Care Routine

I posted this photo on Instagram the other day and received so many DM’s about how my hair is colored, and how I keep it healthy and icy/ashy.  My response to the color is always, “Uh, I’m not sure.  I’ll have to ask my stylist and get back to you.”  I have never been one to get the same cut/color pretty much my whole life (Brie, if you’re reading this, you are so appreciated by me for always going with the flow with my hair transformations) which makes that answer kind of a difficult one.

Over a year ago I chopped about 12″ of my hair off and loved the “lob” life for a bit.  In fact, I went shorter, and blonder at the time.  I really did love it…until I didn’t anymore.  I decided to grow my hair out again and go with something less high maintenance – all you blondes out there know exactly what I’m talking about.  So now I have multi-tonal hair.  The majority of my hair is a few shades darker than my natural dirty blonde color (I am a natural level 7 to those of you interested) with blonde highlights framing the face and what I call the “undercarriage” just behind my ears.  Essentially when I pull it back it looks like I have very blonde hair with a darker underlay at the nape of my neck; when it’s down, it’s fun and still work appropriate.

Because I am passionate about hair care in general, I will break all of the questions up into a few posts because I personally feel that hair products are a huge part of hair care and using the right ones can really change your hair game.  Let me start off by saying, I am not a professional hair stylist.  Everything I will tell you will be 100% based on my personal experiences, personal opinions, and will include comments and suggestions from my stylist as well since she is a professional.  Because a lot of you wanted to know more about what steps my stylist actually takes to get my hair to where it is at today (i.e. her technique and shades she chooses) that will be a post I provide after my next appointment because she is a hair magician and can explain her technique way better than I ever could.

Today’s post will solely revolve around my current purple shampoo obsession.

I have used many purple shampoos and conditioners in the last 10 years and am always searching for the right one that pulls out the brassy tones, and actually makes my hair and scalp look and feel healthy.  I have noticed that some purple shampoos actually make my hair feel a bit dirty or gritty which isn’t good when you try to extend the length of time between washes.  Now, when I say “brassy” that to me means more golden toned blonde as opposed to and icy/ashy blonde.  When I leave the salon I am always excited about the result being a beautiful bright, icy blonde (around my face) and after some time of blow drying and styling, the hair begins to turn more of a brassy shade.  This is where purple shampoo comes in to play…

What exactly is purple shampoo?

Imagine a color wheel…remember those from art class way back when?  If your goal is to counteract the effects of styling on your blonde locks, the color purple is opposite from yellow on the wheel which means it will cancel out that color.  As we wash our hair with the purple shampoo, it helps to cancel out any red and yellow undertones that cause the brassiness.  Essentially what happens is the purple shampoo brightens up your hair with the blue hues coming through which creates an icy/ashy blonde.

How is purple shampoo applied?

You can use purple shampoo two different ways.
1.  The shower, of course!  As we shower and the warm water hits your hair, it causes the shaft to swell/expand and will become more “porous” allowing the purple shampoo to really soak into the hair and cancel out the brassiness.  A general rule of thumb (depending on the potency of your purple shampoo) is to let the shampoo sit on your hair for 1-5 minutes to really let it do its job.  After that time is up, rinse your hair with cold water (yes, that will take some getting use to…it’s a shocker to your body at first) so that it will cause the hair shaft to close and seal in the color.
2.  On dry hair!  Purple shampoo can be used as a form of toner on your hair.  All you do is work in small sections to cover the areas that need a little de-brassing, wait about 5 minutes, and rinse your hair in cold water until clean.

Why should you give purple shampoo a try?

Honestly for me it’s about saving time and money.  Using purple shampoo can extend the life of your color so that you can go beyond 6 weeks between color treatments…unless you’re a all over bleach and tone because your roots are what matters at that point.  If you have the ability to extend the length of time between salon visits, ultimately you’re saving some pennies throughout the year which is important to us all!

Here are the top 5 purple shampoos that I have tried and believe to work well:

Daddy-O Purple Shampoo by Lush – Honestly this is one that you absolutely cannot let sit on your hair for longer than maybe 2 minutes.  Although purple shampoo will not legit dye your hair purple, it can “stain” your hair a pale purple shade.  For those of you that prefer a more natural approach, this is a great option!

TIGI Bed Head Dumb Blonde Shampoo – This shampoo works pretty well at toning the hair, but, makes my hair feel limp and heavy afterwards.  Since that’s not my jam because of my natural hair texture and thickness, that doesn’t mean that you won’t love it as well!

Clairol Shimmer Lights Purple Shampoo –  This is a great budget friendly option for you frugal buyers out there.  It works well, but, I personally am not a fan of the scent.  That’s not necessarily a deal breaker for me, but, it is something I would personally change about it.

Matrix So Silver Shampoo – This set is definitely on the more expensive side, but, they work really well.  I do like using both the shampoo and conditioner to ensure that I’m being consistent with formulas for my hair.

Redken Blondage Shampoo and Conditioner – I am currently using and loving the shampoo and conditioner!  Let me warn you, it will temporarily stain your hands and nails…it does wash off quickly though so no worries.  I feel that this specific duo has stepped up my blonde game and have been recommending it to anyone that comments on my hair.  It’s amazing!

Have you ever used a purple shampoo before?

Holiday Gift Guide For Little Boys

It’s finally Friday!  Who is ready for the weekend?  I know I am!  It is officially the last day of holiday gift guides…for now anyway.

My son is currently 9 years old and really loves technology, and building things.  I have curated a gift guide of items that I know he would love to receive this year…and most likely will receive.

1// Gravity Maze Marble Run

2//LEGO Robo Explorer

3//Walkie Talkies and Binoculars

4//VTECH Kidizoom Smartwatch

5// Stomp Rocket

6// LEGO Avengers Sanctum Sanctorum

Holiday Gift Guide for Little Girls

Another day, another gift guide!  Today I’m going to showcase a few items for younger girls.  I am focusing an ages 5-10 years for this one as my daughter is currently 7 and this will include some items that she has personally picked out for her list, and a few items that I have chosen for fun!

1// LEGO Unikitty Kit – My daughter is obsessed with cats (despite the fact that we do not own any) and LEGO’s so this is the perfect combo!

2//Klutz Make Your Own Bath Bomb Kit – In the interest of giving my kids activities to do with items that they can actually use afterwards.  This bath bomb kit is a cool idea and is totally usable!

3// VTECH Kidizoom Smartwatch – Both of my kids are obsessed with my Apply Watch and I am not about to spend that kind of money on something that they will either lose, or, potentially damage.  That to say, this is an awesome option and has educational bonuses!

4// Kids Table and Chairs – We used to have a kids table that unfortunately received some irreparable damage in our last move and we just never replaced the set.  I love that this is simple, feminine, and would be perfect for tea parties with her friends (and Daddy).

5//Ballerina Mouse – I just think this is so stinking’ adorable!  I love that it’s simple, portable, and allows for little minds to create their own world.

6// Once Upon a Time Tea Set – Speaking of tea sets…this one is beautiful and vintage inspired and I love it!

Holiday Gift Guide For Teens

Gifts for a teen girl:

Fujifilm Instax Mini 9 – We have 3 of these babies at our house and both kids love them!  I love that they’re portable, provides instant gratification, and is such a fun way to bring back nostalgia from when I was a kid.

Invisibobble Hair Ring – I believe that I can speak on behalf of all girls when I say that you can never have enough hair accessories and any teen girl would love these hair rings.

Natural Daylight Makeup Mirror – All girls need a makeup mirror (even if they prefer to go bare faced).  This is an inexpensive option that provides a really great daylight glow when used.

Apple Watch – Although this is a splurge for a teenager, this is an awesome option for a teen girl that loves tech-y gifts this would be perfect.

Hello Perfume – Perfume is always a great gift option.  I personally own this perfume and it is light, refreshing, and perfect for any time of the year.

Bunny Rabbit Ear Bow Scrunchies – Honestly these are just adorable and even at my age I’d totally rock these with a messy bun!

Gifts for a teen boy:

Oculus Go Virtual Reality Headset – This is definitely the splurge item for your teen boy.  We own a VR headset and they really are a blast so I’m sure your teen and his friends will be fighting over who gets to use it next!

Powerbeats3 Wireless Headphones – What boy doesn’t need some headphones?  These are a great option because they’re low profile, and wireless to boot!

PS4 Battery Pack – If your teen has a gaming system, a battery pack is a must!  The controllers will eat through batteries like nobody’s business and this battery pack will be a lifesaver!

Catalyst Cologne – Let me just say that this cologne has been around forever!  I remember buying this cologne for an old friend of mine for his birthday when we were teenagers….I feel old now.  It smells rally good, and packaging is pretty awesome too.

Portable Power Charger – Honestly we all need one of these.  This is a quick option to keep your teens phone charged during the day and it’s easily stowed away.

Portable Bluetooth Speaker – We have a smaller version of this speaker that we bust out during the Summer months when the kids play outside and anytime we use our hot tub and it is such a good quality speaker for the price.  If your teen loves to listen to music, this is the perfect gift!

What gift(s) would you choose for your teen (or yourself)?

Holiday Gift Guide For Him

Happy Tuesday!  As we continue the gift guide series, it’s only fitting to follow the gift guide for her, with a gift guide for him.  I don’t know about you, but, my husband is not an easy person to shop for so I sometimes have to be creative with his gifts.  This gift guide is a mixture between items I know my husband would love, other men in my family would love, and my male friends as well!

1// Carhartt Zip Up Hoodie – You will notice there are a few Carhartt items on here and it’s for one simple reason – the quality cannot be beat!  It is by far my husbands favorite brand for just about anything they offer and the hoodies are always a win for him.

2// Carhartt Hubbard Flannel Shirt – I kind of have a thing for a bearded dude in a flannel so I definitely dress my husband in flannels as often as I can.

3// Carhartt Boot Socks – Again, these socks are awesome quality and provide a little extra comfort and warmth for the boot wearer in your life.

4// UGG Slippers – Believe it or not, my husband did not wear slippers until about 3 months ago.  You guys he is obsessed!  I have a feeling I’ll be buying him a new pair each year from here on out.

5// ECHO Spot – This is an easy option for the technology love in your life.  They’re pretty sweet if you ask me!

6// Gerber Multi-Tool – I may actually want this for myself haha.  I think a Gerber is such a great option for the guy in your life that has just about everything else and you’re at a loss for a gift to give.  It’s practical, and extremely useful!

7// Beard Balm – For all of those bearded men out there, beard care is super important!  If you want your hair to stay healthy and tamed, I highly recommend this balm.  We have purchased probably over a dozen of these at this point and my husband always recommends it to others.

8// Braun Electric Shaver – For those that prefer a shaved face, this would be a great option.  It is more of a splurge item, but, I think with the years of use that one would get out of it, it’s totally worth it.

9// Herschel Supply Co. Duffel Bag – Every guy needs a bag of some sort.  My husband isn’t terribly picky about what he uses (honestly he would probably shove everything he owns into a backpack if he could), but, has always been a believer in duffel bags.  This one is a great brand that will stand up to some serious abuse.

10// Qalo Ring – My husband has worn his Qalo ring for a few years now and loves it.  I’m always on the hunt for one with a design I know he will love and this one is it for sure.  I love that these are a safe option for anyone that has the potential for work related injuries because they’re inexpensive and easy to cut off if need be.

11// Samsung Galaxy Smartwatch – Pretty much any smartwatch will do.  I love that this one looks like an actual watch, but, provides the same functions as a smartwatch does.

12// Beats Solo3 Headphones – Whether your guy is a gym nut, a musical lover, or really has any reason to wear headphones, these are for him.  Again, this is a splurge item, but, well worth it!

Do you see anything on that list that the guy in your life would love?

3// Instar Mode Military Anorak Sherpa Jacket – I love the laid back feel of this jacket.  It will keep you warm while keeping things casual.

4// CC Beanie – I have a few of these and absolutely love them!  They offer so many different styles that will surely fit your style, and your budget!

5// T3 Whirl Trio Styling Wand – I am a fan of styling wands.  This set will give you multiple looks with curls that will last!

6// Clarisonic Mia Smart Sonic Brush Gift Set – I have had the same Mia for the last 6 years…they’re that good!  Totally worth the splurge and your skin will thank you!

7// Instant Pot – I use mine a few times a week and it legit makes life so much easier!  The food turns out great without compromising the healthy meal options for my family.

8// The Essential Instant Pot Cookbook – I have used this book SO much since I received it about 6 months ago.  It has some of the tastiest recipes and they’re all super easy to make…plus I love a cookbook that shows photos of what the food is actually supposed to look like haha.

9// Nespresso Inissia Espresso Machine – this is absolutely on my wish list this year!  I have seen and heard so many great things about the Nespresso machines.  I have been a fan of the De’Longhi days since my Starbucks days and their quality is incredible so I have no doubt the Nespresso machines will be any less than amazing!

10// Rae Dunn “Hey Girl” Mug – I stinkin’ love Rae Dunn!  I have a cupboard full of these mugs will a bunch of different sayings and this was my first one ever.  I posted a photo of it on Instagram a few days back and received a bunch of questions about where I got mine from.  There are a few online platforms, but honestly, your best bet is to frequent TJMaxx if you can because every not and then they get ginormous shipments of these goodies in and you can score some sweet pieces!

11// Posh Habitat Sherpa Velvet Throw – Everyone needs a cozy blanket and this one is incredibly soft.  My dog may, or may not, have stolen mine so we may need to invest in another one.

12// Kindle Paperwhite E-Reader – Y’all know my love for books and the Kindle Paperwhite definitely gives you the best of both worlds.  You get to have a ton of books all in one device, while still having the sense of reading a legit book.  I highly recommend this!

The Best Damn Thanksgiving Leftovers Casserole

Alright friends, now that Thanksgiving is officially done and we all still feel that post turkey coma, it’s time to put those leftovers to good use!  Don’t get me wrong, I love me some warm turkey sandwiches for a few days afterwards, but, I like to create something easy, delicious, and kid friendly that will last us a few meals after the holiday.

I introduce you to the best damn thanksgiving leftover casserole!  I came up with this recipe a few years back because I found that my family are fans of mixing all their favorite sides together with the turkey and creating tiny sandwiches with the dinner rolls.  I figured if I made it a point to create a casserole with all of the favorites it would be a winner, thankfully I was right on the first try!

This recipe is husband and kid tested and approved!  I honestly make this throughout the year per my husbands request and it is just the best comfort food that makes my family extremely happy!

I have been LOVING all things camouflage lately!  First of all, green is my favorite color so I’m definitely drawn to the camo life.  Second of all, camo (and anything with the camo design such as the SPANX leggings) is an awesome neutral option for your wardrobe which I love.  Lastly, I just love it so there’s that haha.

What have you been loving lately?
